Supplement your CAL needs with Wiresoft
With an RDS bundle from Wiresoft, you save additional money in the process! While Microsoft usually only offers the very latest version of Remote Desktop Services, Wiresoft gives you the option to supplement your existing licenses of your 2019 version of RDS. This way, you won't have to upgrade to the - often more expensive - more current RDS version in the future. and your acquisition costs will be significantly reduced.
Currently you can find the following Microsoft Remote Desktop Service 2019 version - either as a user - or as a device license:
RDS CAL 2019 - Advantages of Remote Desktop Services 2019 from Windows
The RDS 2019 is a centralized desktop and application platform, i.e. the software for all programs used at the workstations, must be installed only once, centrally. Users then access it via CAL (Client Access License) from any computer - whether at work or in the home office.
Windows Remote Desktop Services 2019 are based on a version of Windows Server. They represent a virtualization platform that can be used to map very different application scenarios. Using RemoteApp, the Windows session is virtualized and can be executed by any authorized user or end device.
Depending on the Windows RDS version used in the company, this contains various scenarios and technologies or is supplemented by such. As a result, the range of possible applications for Remote Desktop Services is continuously expanding and the changing requirements in the modern working world are thus taken into account.
RDS CAL 2019 - The most important functions of Microsoft RDS 2019 at a glance
With the core components of Remote Desktop Services, you can not only set up and maintain standardized workstations for your employees and create secure connections, but also manage your CALs - a not insignificant feature that tends to be overlooked.
Remote Desktop Connection Broker 2019
This element of RDS acts as a connection broker between each user with a remote desktop and their respective server in your organization. As a result, the user's running programs will remain intact even if the connection is disconnected. The RD Connection broker can then reconnect the user to their original session.
Remote Desktop Gateway 2019
The RD Gateway provides a fast and secure connection via the Internet between end-user virtual desktops or RemoteApp programs located outside the corporate firewall and the corporate network. The RD Gateway establishes an encrypted SSL tunnel between the user's device and the RD Gateway server, authenticates the user in the environment, and also defines which resources the user can access in a secured environment. In addition, the Remote Desktop Gateway is responsible for transferring traffic and can also define various timeout properties, among other things, should a user be inactive for an extended period of time.
Remote Desktop Licensing 2019
This feature governs license usage when deploying Remote Desktop Services. Once a user or device connects to the Remote Desktop license server, it decides if and which RDS CAL is needed and creates a connection to the RD session host server and then to the desktops or apps that will be used.
Once a user or endpoint connects to an RD session host server, the RD session host server decides if an RDS CAL is needed. The RD session host server then requests an RDS Client Access license from the remote desktop license server. If an appropriate RDS CAL is available on a license server, the RDS CAL is issued to the client, and the client can connect to the RD session host server and from there to the desktops or apps that will be used.
Remote Desktop Session Host (RDSH) 2019
Remote Desktop Session Host is the new name for terminal servers. The RDSH hosts server session based desktops as well as RemoteApp programs and connects users during a session. Besides, they also provide other functions or roles in virtualizing desktops.
Remote Desktop Virtualization Host (RDVH): 2019
The RD Virtualization Host is a specific role of Windows Server 2008 R2. The RD Virtualization Host, as its name implies, hosts virtual desktops. This function is accordingly required in VDI (Virtual Desktop Infrastructure) environments in which Windows 7 or XP is used as the guest system. The Remote Desktop Virtualization Host distinguishes between Personal Virtual Desktops, which can be assigned to a specific user, and Virtual Desktop Pools, which are assigned to desktops from a pool, similar to workstations shared by several users.
Remote Desktop Web Access (RDWA) 2019
Microsoft Remote Desktop Web Access replaces Terminal Services Web Access. This Remote Desktop Services (RDS) role is available starting with Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2012/2012 R2 and Windows Server 2016. RDWA allows users to access the RemoteApp and Remote Desktop connection either through the Start menu or also through a web browser.
Remote Desktop Web Access also includes Remote Desktop Web Connection, which allows a user to remotely access any computer for which they have remote desktop access.
RDS 2019 Compatibility
The RDS applications as well as RDS desktops can thus be used by completely different client devices and operating systems or even HTML5-enabled browsers and Java clients. For example, tablets can also use the respective services and applications. Users access RDS resources via the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) integrated in Windows. In addition, the protocols of other providers can also be used, for example Citrix HDX or also VMware PC over IP.
RDS CAL 2019 - What CALs are available for RDS 2019? The Microsoft licensing system
The Microsoft licensing system is increasingly based on Client Access Licenses, also called CALs. This means that the use (license) of a software is independent of its implementation. A Remote Desktop Services CAL grants only authorized users access to the server. Unauthorized third parties are thus denied access, which means additional security.
A Windows server operating system usually already includes two administrative remote access rights, but these may only be used for server administration. Use for user sessions is therefore not permitted. Microsoft's license terms state that an RDS CAL is always required as soon as an authorized employee accesses either a Windows Server Desktop directly or an application that is provided via a Windows Server Desktop.
This also applies when accessing a Windows Server via third-party software, in which case an appropriate RDS license is also required.
RDS CAL 2019 - What is the difference between User CALs and Device CALs?
There are two different forms of Microsoft CALs for Remote Desktop Services 2019 - User CALs and Device CALs - depending on whether the focus is on the user or the device:
User CALs: A User CAL is only ever for a single specific user. Via User CAL, this user can access the server from completely different devices, for example, at work on his desktop PC in the office and from another PC or notebook when he is on the road.
Device CALs: A Device CAL is a device-dependent license, related to a specific single device, e.g. desktop PC in the office OR notebook. However, any user using the licensed device can also use the Remote Desktop Services provided for it.
Of course, which type of CALs is right for your organization will vary from case to case, this decision is mainly based on the number of employees in your organization as well as their preferred usage pattern: For employees who work with Windows programs almost exclusively on their own PC at their workplace, a Device CAL is the right type of license. However, employees who access the server flexibly on different devices and workstations, i.e. also in the home office or on the road, benefit from a User CAL.
