Advantages of a CAL for Microsoft Exchange Server 2016
The Groupware Exchange Server 2016 forms an important basis for controlling and managing processes in modern companies. Exchange Server 2016 functions as an internal and external interface: It connects all employees and departments across all locations, and many integrated tools of this powerful server software contribute to a sustainable increase in the efficiency of processes in a company: In particular, communication is facilitated by the central administration and clear archiving of all contacts and e-mails. It also allows joint work on project documents, which is also improved by version management.
These features are complemented by a differentiated rights management of individual access to appointments and projects by individual employees.
Microsoft Exchange Server 2016 thus increases the flexibility and productivity of corporate processes, while at the same time offering maximum transparency and allowing comprehensive control. Work processes are simplified, so Exchange Server 2016 not only helps to save time and costs, but also increases competitiveness.
Windows Exchange Server 2016 - the most important innovations at a glance
Compared to the previous version Windows Exchange Server 2013, Windows Exchange Server 2016 contains a number of important innovations and further developments. The optimization of the server architecture was the main focus here: The number of server roles was reduced to two: Mailbox and Edge Transport. The scaling of functions has also been simplified and support for various cloud services has been improved.
New functions and designation "Outlook on the Web
Web access to Exchange Server 2016 has been extensively redesigned by Microsoft, which also renamed it Outlook on the Web (previously known as Outlook Web Access or Outlook Web App).
The Web interface has also been optimized; it can now be used without prior installation of the Outlook app on a smartphone or tablet under Android or iOS. In addition, Outlook can now be used not only with the Microsoft browsers Edge and Internet Explorer 11, but also with Google Chrome, Safari and Firefox without major restrictions.
The new "Sweep" function simplifies the administration of e-mails. For example, you can define how many days a sender's emails are kept, or that only the most recent message is saved.
The calendar has a new look and new features: In addition to e-mail reminders for calendar events, it is now possible, for example, to suggest a different time for meeting invitations.
Improved search scalability
A key benefit of the eDiscovery search architecture in Exchange Server 2016 is improved search scalability. It is now decentralized and uses multiple servers. This makes it much faster. In addition, when you enter a search term in Outlook 2016 or in Outlook on the Web, the program makes suggestions based on frequently used contacts, the e-mails in your mailbox, and previous search queries. In addition, contextual filters such as date range or similar senders help to find the information you are looking for more easily. Outlook on the Web also lets you search your own calendar or someone else's.
The number of mailboxes that can be searched has been increased from 5,000 to 10,000, and the same applies to archive mailboxes, so that a total of 20,000 mailboxes are searched simultaneously.
Improved Outlook collaboration
Files stored in the Microsoft cloud services OneDrive for Business and SharePoint 2016 can now be included in an e-mail as a link in Outlook 2016 and Outlook on the Web instead of as an attachment. The access rights of the recipient can be individually adjusted. The recipient can then open the linked file directly as an attachment.
Support of Hybrid Cloud Services
Exchange Server 2016 now also supports hybrid scenarios. A mailbox can therefore be located on a local server or in the cloud. And with the cloud extensions Exchange Online Archiving and Azure Rights Management, local mailboxes can also be used.
The Microsoft licensing system for Exchange Server 2016
The Microsoft licensing model regulates the individual use of the Exchange Server version 2016 through the different licensing options, differentiating between the scope of services and functions of the licensed Exchange Server according to the server edition: The two server licenses Standard and Enterprise not only offer a different scope of functions, but also a different scaling of the services.
On the other hand, the CALs for Exchange Server 2016 differ according to the way the rights to access the server are defined: the rights are assigned either to an individual terminal device as a device CAL, or to an individual user as a user CAL.
For this purpose, this Exchange version also has two CAL editions, which can be described as Standard and Enterprise CAL. The two Exchange Server editions can be combined with the respective CAL type. Thus, you can use an Enterprise CAL with the Standard Edition or a Standard with the Enterprise Edition.
Server Licenses for Microsoft Exchange Server 2016
The Microsoft Exchange Server 2016 is available from Wiresoft in two editions: Standard and Enterprise. The main difference between the two is scalability: while the Standard is limited to five deployed databases per server, the Enterprise Edition offers scalability up to 100 deployed databases per server. In addition, this edition has more extensive virtualization rights and data protection.
Access Licenses for Microsoft Exchange Server 2016
The client access authorizations for the Microsoft Exchange Server version 2016 are available in two different variants - as User CAL and as Device CAL - which differ only in the type of access to the corresponding server: as user or as device.
Which CAL variant is the most practical may differ from company to company or institution to institution. Not only the number of employees accessing the server is important, but also the way in which this is done:
If employees primarily use the Exchange Server regularly at a fixed workplace via PC or laptop, a Device CAL is the better solution.
However, if an employee's workplace is designed to be flexible or mobile, so that he or she can access the server from different end devices and thus from different locations, a User CAL better reflects these needs. The differences between the two CAL versions are explained below.
The Device CAL for Exchange Server is an exclusively device-related license. It authorizes a specific end device to access the Exchange Server, i.e. this can be EITHER a computer OR a notebook. This means that different users who are authorized to access the licensed end device can use the services of Exchange Server 2016. Device CAL is therefore practical if different employees alternately use a PC in the company.
The User CAL for Exchange Server allows only a single user to access it. Since it is a quasi-personal license, this user can access Exchange Server from any end device capable of doing so. This means that he is not bound to a stationary workstation such as the desktop PC in the office, but can also use another computer, for example in the home office, or even a notebook on business trips. So if an employee often works away from home and wants to access the company server, the User CAL for Exchange Server is the more practical option. Individual rights assignment is also possible here.
Distinction between a Standard and an Enterprise CAL for Microsoft Exchange Server
As mentioned above, the Standard and Enterprise editions for Windows Exchange Server 2016 differ in terms of both scalability and functionality.
A StandardAL and an Enterprise CAL allow you to use the Standard and Enterprise editions of Exchange Server 2016, while a Standard provides access to the Enterprise Standard of Exchange Server 2016 and vice versa. The difference between the Standard and Enterprise CAL is the scope of the functions of Exchange Server 2016 that are available in each case. While the Standard CAL is a kind of basic access license, the Enterprise CAL is an add-on with extended functions.
Advantages of the distinction between a Standard and the Enterprise CAL for Microsoft Exchange Server
There is a simple reason for this distinction betweenstandard and enterprise CAL: Not every user working with Microsoft Exchange Server 2016 needs the full range of services and functions. So companies save money by purchasing a Standard that covers all the needs of a user.
However, larger companies and organizations in particular benefit from the extensions of the Enterprise CAL. The most important difference between the CAL for the Enterprise Edition and the CAL for the Standard is the possibility to operate a significantly higher number of databases. This means that up to 100 mailbox databases can be managed per server, each with up to 2 terabytes.
Furthermore, the Enterprise CAL with the Exchange Admin Center offers the use of functions such as Data Loss Prevention (DLP): Data Loss Prevention prevents critical information from being passed on to unauthorized persons, while the integrated Intelligent Message Filter (IMF) and SmartScreen Filter technology prevent potentially malicious messages from ending up in a mailbox at all. Furthermore, the CAL of the Enterprise Edition also has more extensive virtualization rights: It allows the operation of an unlimited number of virtual machines and Hyper-V containers.
In addition, it also offers the Enterprise functions Storage Spaces Direct, Storage Replica as well as Shielded Virtual Machines and OneDrive for Business for editing, updating and sharing data in real time.
